How Ayurveda Understands Disease

In Ayurveda, disease is understood as a functional imbalance of Doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) along with vitiation of body tissues (Dhatus), supporting tissues (Upadhatus), and waste products (Malas). These internal disturbances may present as pain, inflammation, degeneration, metabolic dysfunction, neurological symptoms, or chronic illness.

Diagnosis Beyond a Name

Many patients approach us with diagnoses such as arthritis, disc prolapse, IBS, migraine, diabetes-related complications, skin disorders, or autoimmune conditions. In Ayurvedic diagnosing, a name alone is not enough. We assess the causative Dosha involvement, affected tissues, and the stage of imbalance—even when a condition is unclear or not specifically listed.

Inclusive Scope of Care

Because Ayurveda evaluates disease at its root level, care is not limited to a fixed list of conditions. Even if your condition is not mentioned on this page, it may still be addressed through Ayurvedic principles. Treatment is never the same for everyone and evolves based on the individual’s internal imbalance.

Understanding General Health Conditions

Many chronic health conditions arise due to poor lifestyle, stress, improper diet and lack of physical activity. These include fatigue, obesity, hormonal imbalance and metabolic disturbances.

In Ayurveda, such conditions are often linked to imbalance of doshas and improper functioning of Agni, leading to accumulation of Ama (toxins) in the body.
